Spare a thought for our wee Scotland. First World Cup outing in 28 years, won the first game against Haiti, and sadly lost 1-0 to Morocco despite playing really well in the second half and there being TWO bad calls that should have been penalties. But the Tartan Army have completely taken over Boston with their joy and silliness and now no one wants them to leave. So the mayor decided she’d make Boston and Glasgow official twin cities! The content on the daily from the fans has been sublime. Wherever the Tartan Army go, fun follows.
Thank you for the World Cup recap Clara. The 5am starts in my timezone (that's if you don't just pull an all nighter) are beyond me so I am very grateful for your service
I’ve never been a big World Cup person but I married into a soccer family 12 years ago so I’ve become a bigger fan. My FIL is Iranian and this is the first year our kids have really watched at all, we watched most of the Iran/Belgium game today. I hate the treatment of the Iranian team and my kids have been wearing their World Cup Iran shirts a lot, my 7 yo can still wear his brother’s from 2022.
My partner had literally never watched an entire football match before this World Cup and now we get to watch the Canada v South Africa match, historic first knock-out round match for both teams, and it’s exactly what I love about sports, no matter what you think will happen and what’s likely to happen, you never know what will actually happen! ⚽️❤️
Like you, I’ve loved seeing nations who would not have normally qualified for the World Cup participate and, more importantly, shown that they can hang with the big boys.
As an Argentinian I’ve also loved seeing how connected the team seems to be and how unburdened Messi seems to be on the field (recognizing he’s actually got a lot going on personally with his Dad being treated for an undisclosed illness). Love the surprise people who don’t regularly watch MLS felt after seeing Messi play in their first game against Algeria. It is also bittersweet because I’m not ready for this to be his last World Cup.
Regarding MLS, Honorable mention for Cucho, former Columbus Crew player now in Spain, and his insane assist in Colombia’s game against Uzbekistan.
Finally, seeing the barely disguised loathing Zlatan and Henry have for Alexi Lalas has been delightful as I feel the same way but cannot express it whereas they get to embarrass him on the regular. Normally I wouldn’t be this petty but Lalas asks for it.
Btw sorry for the tie for Uruguay. That Cape Verde defense 😅. On a very shallow note, I hadn’t noticed how much Agustin Canobbio looks like a baby Forlan. I had to do a double take and for a second asked myself if Forlan was back.
I am a Tottenham fan and therefore would love to see Harry Kane succeed at a national level, but I am also Australian and would not like to see England win a World Cup. Truly a harrowing concept

Nothing makes more sense to me than Scotland and Boston being like 🤝
They also took over Providence and I for one welcome our Tartan overlords.
Trump is embarrassing for so many reasons, but having no reverence for good sportsmanship is chief among them.
How about Canada's first ever win at the World Cup, and on home soil?!!
So amazing! 🍁
I caught Germany/ Ivory Coast at my nail salon and honestly, the best way to kill manicure time. What a great game
love the concept of having a lowkey watch party at the nail salon
here's to hoping ronaldo extends his international goalless streak!!! btw curacao is in caribbean
Jesús Christ I definitely was talking about Cape Verde in my head when I wrote that thank you!
love you and hate Fifa in equal measure, thanks for the insight
As a World Cup (enthusiast!) newbie this was such a helpful and fun read

Curaçao is not in Africa, it’s in the Caribbean.
Yep, I know, I’ve corrected the error! Was thinking of Cape Verde when I wrote it, that’s my bad. x
